Dr.
Zakir Hussain was one of those nationalist Muslim leaders who followed the
Gandhian principles all their lives and who spent a major part of life in
fighting for the cause of freedom. Gandhiji’s programme for basic education,
elementary skills and moral education held more appeal to him and he worked
whole-heatedly for it. He chose the field of education to work for, although he
worked with Gandhiji for the upliftment of Harijans, for propagating khadi and
such other reconstruction programmes.
Establishment of the Jamia Milia of Delhi is the result of his efforts.
Dr.
Zakir Hussain held high posts after independence, viz. Governor of Bihar in
1957, Vice-president of India in 1962, President of India in 1967. He was also
the Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University from 1948-46.
Dr Zakir Hussain was born in Hyderabad in a respectable family. He
got his basic education in Aligarh. Later, he went to Germany for higher
education. Gandhiji was all praise for the work he did for basic education. He
will always be remembered as a great patriot, a social worker and an
educationist. As a writer and a staunch believer in Indian culture, Dr Hussain
stands out apart. He wrote several books for the reformation and development of
Indian education. He was a symbol of secularism. In 1963, he was awarded
“Bharat Ratna” in recognition of his services rendered to the nation.
