Dr. B.R Ambedkar As the unquestioned leader of the depressed
classes and the principal architect of the Indian Constitution, the name of Dr.
Bhimrao Ambedkar will always be remembered in Indian history. His was the main
inspiration behind the inclusion of special provisions in the Constitution of
India for the development of schedule caste people. Dr. Ambedkar played a key
role in the preparation of the Indian Constitution. Dr. Ambedkar was the Law
Minister of India from 1947 to 1951. During 1942 -194 Vie also served as the
Member of Viceroy’s Executive Council, and from 1926, to 1934 he was a
nominated member of the Bombay Legislative Council. He attended the Round Table
Conferences in London as a representative of the depressed classes of India.
Dr. Ambedkar also took part in the Satyagraha of untouchables at Nasik in 1930
for opening the Hindu temples to them. For hitting at the con-science of the
orthodox Hindus, Dr. Ambedkar together with his 2 lakh followers embraced
Buddhism on 14 October, 1956.
Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was born on 14th April 1893, in a very
poor untouchable family of Madhya Pradesh. Being an untouchable, the young
Ambedkar had to face all the indignities suffered by the rest of the members of
his class. The then ruler of Baroda was highly impressed with his talents and
he helped Ambedkar to travel to U.S.A. for higher studies. In U.S.A., he did
his M.A. in 1915 and Ph.D. In 1925, Dr.
Ambedkar set up his legal practice at the Bombay High Court. In 1916. From 1918
to 1920, Dr. Ambedkar was also a Professor of law.
This widely learned man and liberator of the downtrodden passed
away on 6th December, 1956.
